Nick’s Pizza & Pub: A Model of Efficiency
My father, Bill McMullin, has been in the pizza business for over 30 years and makes an amazing pizza and is a savvy business man. With that, I have been accustomed to pizza all my life working all throughout high school and part of college in various positions including management. To this day he comes to me for advice on any major business or marketing decision. I’m happy to report that even though the Janesville community has been struggling (much like the nation), his restaurant is doing quite well.
In a recent article in Inc. magazine entitled Lessons From a Blue Collar Millionaire, Nick Sarillo, CEO and founder of Nick’s Pizza and Pub, did a great job in outlining how he made pizza a million dollar business. He claims anyone can do it, and I believe him. You should too.
Fueled by the article and located only 1.5 hours away, I decided dad and I should take a trip. I can say first hand that everything in the article is spot on. The restaurant was clean and well run. The manager, Scott, was extremely receptive of a fellow pizza owner and took us on a grand tour, complete with further explanations on how the operation runs on a daily basis. All employees were extremely polite, driven, and engaged. How can a company in which the majority of its employees are between the ages of 16-18 do well? Empowerment. Every employee knew his or her role and took stock in the company. They worked as a team to achieve a common goal, and any wins were openly celebrated and displayed.
What other restaurant do you know that offers half price pizza on Mondays? I bet you don’t. Nick states that as long as the unemployment lines stay long, he will help ease the community’s pain. The community embraces Nick’s efforts and rewards him.
I could write about other extremely creative ideas and concepts implemented on a process basis and a marketing basis, but I want you to read the article for yourself. Many of Nick’s concepts can be applied to any industry and/or business.
A special thanks to Scott in allowing us to get an inside look at the Crystal Lake, IL location, and I hope to connect with Nick Sarillo soon.
